Cherry Varieties for the Modern Orchard

There is no shortage of quality cherry varieties for growers considering a new planting. Nursery availability for sweet cherries is better than it has been in many years. Many of these varieties are better quality than older eastern varieties while maintaining the same improved resistance to rain cracking. Check the online inventory for availability.

University of MN opens Rave® and other new varieties to direct market growers.

The University of Minnesota has introduced several varieties available through their new Superior Fruit Innovations™ (SFI) programs.

SuperSnap™

Big Flirt™ and SuperSnap™ are available for both wholesale and farm market growers, and the terms and fees can be found here. At the same time, they have made Rave® available to direct-market fruit growers through the SFI program.

The fee structure is similar to the Midwest Apple Improvement Association. According to the program website, growers joining the program will have access to numerous new varieties over the coming years. Triumph® and Kudos® are not part of the program and remain open releases with a one-time licensing fee.

Peach plantings need to be renewed (sometimes sooner than growers would like), and there are many new options available that improve upon the qualities of older varieties. The varieties listed below have characteristics such as improved flavor, size, color, and bud and tree hardiness.

Early Ripening Varieties

Desiree™ (-26)

Desiree®

A highly colored, semi-freestone peach. Desiree was developed by Rutgers University with good bacterial spot resistance.

Earlystar® (-18)

Earlystar® has a sweet flavor and firm texture. It colors to 90% red. This heavy cropper benefits from heavy thinning to achieve optimum size.

Summer Serenade® (-16)

Harvesting in Garnet Beauty season, Summer Serenade is a cold hardy, productive, semi-freestone peach.

Glenglo™ (-10)

A reliable early season peach with excellent flavor, Glenglo is a large peach with low fuzz. Fruit is nearly freestone when tree ripened.
